Is location important while writing? As I was trying to address this question for my paper, I had the intention of basically answering ‘no’. I had figured that all that matters is the mind of the writer and not the setting. But I think I had simplified this answer too much. And I proved myself wrong today while studying. I rode my bike to the Notre Dame library because our study carrel was about ninety degrees. Also, I find it easier to focus in a library because I don’t have as much, such as Facebook, to distract me. So, while I was about to write in my paper that location did not matter to writing I realized that it mattered to me and it probably has significance to authors too. Evidently location matters more to me, and to writing, than I thought.
I still believe that the mind and talent of the author is more important than the location. Just because I went to the library to work is not going to magically make my writing better. Likewise, an amazing author is going to talented no matter where they write.I consider the library to be more conducive to writing and easier to focus in; this will probably affect my paper. Virginia Woolf pointed out Jane Austen as an example of a room affecting writing. If Jane Austen did have a room of her own, would her writing have benefited? It is hard to imagine her writing being different than it is, but I think it would have. While I think the mind matters more to the writing, and this has been my mindset throughout the class, I finally see that location can affect writing.
