I feel place always has an effect on the writer. Whether place negatively influences the the author or dramatically inspires the work, depends on the author. But setting always have an influence.
If place has no influence, then why did we all spend so much time choosing a college? For me I know I have to enjoy my college experience. I would have to be motivated and challenged. Otherwise I would be misserable and want to leave. I chose Saint Marys because I felt it was the right choice for me. As we discuss the influence place has, I can't help but wonder "what if".
What if I had chosen another school? I would be closer to home, meeting new people, and I would have different writings. I would be told to write different assignments and do different work. Because philosophy never interested I try to ignore these questions. But I know I am here, at Saint Mary's, living this experience, because I chose my setting. I chose a place I enjoy and my writing has improved because of it.
Place matters after all.

I also think that place matters, and I think choosing a college is a perfect example of how it does matter. When I looked at colleges, I only looked at schools that were at least 4 hours away from home because I wanted to put myself out there and experience other places. I wanted to be inspired by new experiences and new atmospheres that I'd never experienced before. Being at St. Mary's has done this for me; being from Minnesota I have experienced milder weather (especially during winter) and I have met people I never would have met if I stayed in Minnesota. Overall, I completely agree with Alex that after all, place does matter.
