Colorblindness and Today

The lecture that Charles Gallagher presented to the college was very interesting. The focus of the lecture was colorblindness in American society.

One of the facts that he put up on the overhead stated that "70% of whites generally approve of black/white marriage." While this may be true, it is not entirely common to find interracial marriages, even though the current generation has changed these views. The pointn is that people say one thing, yet do another. They may say that they approve of interracial marriages, but they would never consider doing it themselves.

Another point that Gallagher made was that the media shapes how we view race relations and colorblindness. How ads are presented and how viewers interpret them forms our opinions and views regarding race. The marketing business is very clever in this practice. They want all ads to appeal to every race so that all people will feel as though they are represented and will then be more likely to buy the product being sold.

While I was not able to stay for the entire lecture, I would have liked to listen to what else Gallagher had to say on this topic. Overall, I thought it was a great lecture, especially because he interacted with his audience.

This presentation sounded very interesting! Lately, I have been noticing that public relations is starting to target every race and ethnicity. I really wish I could have gone to the lecture.
