In Act III of "Translations," Yolland disappears. I am intensely intrigued as to what has happened to him. My first reaction is that Manus has done something with him: hurt him, killed him, kidnapped him, whatever.
After the dance, Yolland and Maire are seemingly romantically interested in each other and are seen kissing. Although Manus seems like he has a good head on his shoulders, I could see him acting out in a violent way if he was distraught enough over Maire. Since Manus is an intelligent, well-educated, and nice man, he does not seem, to me anyway, capable of hurting a fly. Taking a closer look, however, may reveal an inner force that lashes out when the love of his life is with another man.
I think he is lying about only watching Maire and Yolland from the bushes. I think that once Maire was safely inside her house, he seduced Yolland into trusting him and then...
Manus is also very anxious to get out of town. He knows that soon everyone is going to know that Yolland is missing and will undoubtedly suspect him. Manus would not want to leave his comfortable and good life if he had not done something that would jeopardize it anyway.

I was also so confused as to what happened to Yolland. Especially since he alluded to the possibiliy of staying in Ireland to Maire. I was also wondering if he was only trying to become romantically involved with Maire for different reasons. Perhaps he was only with Maire to get information out of her in order to advance he and Yancey's efforts to overcome Ireland?
Yes, this is a curious question. Manus does seem perhaps guilty or on edge- I think Manus has something to do witg Yolland's disappearance. I truly believe Yolland would not leave Ireland unless forced to- thus someone made him leave- he very well could be in danger. However- the english could have thought this scandal up only to terrorize and take over the Irish
I agree that their is alot of unanswered questions about Yolland.. but I just helped myself along by concluding that he had a family back home that he went back to England to say goodbye to, because he knew he was not ever going to leave Maire, and because he has a wife and kids at home, he doesn't want Maire to judge him so he just takes off for a couple of days thinking she'd chock it up to the army.. but.. this is probably just me making up stories..
