Sanjeev and Lucy
As soon as I started reading, I immediately noticed the similarities between Sanjeev and Lucy. We discussed in class the idea of Sanjeev hating the Christian statues in the house because Twinkle liked them. Sanjeev says when speaking of the Christian statue, "He did hate it. He hated its immensity, and its flawless, polished surface, and its undeniable value... Most of all he hated it because he knew that Twinkle loved it" (157). Although it is too early in the story to say why, it is assumed that Lucy doesn't like daffodils because Mariah likes them. Lucy says, "I did not know what these flowers were, and so it was a mystery to me why I wanted to kill them. Just like that. I wanted to kill them" (29). Just by the similarities in their language, we can observe how similar Sanjeev and Lucy are. However, it is difficult to determine Lucy's motive. We can tell in "This Blessed House" through many examples that Sanjeev's irritation with the Christian statues is because of Twinkle and her carefree attitude. It seems that Lucy is just irritated with Mariah for some strange reason. Lucy even makes a comment earlier about Mariah's smell. Lucy says, "The smell of Mariah was pleasant. Just that- pleasant... By then I already knew that I wanted to have a powerful odor and would not care if it gave offense" (27). It seems like Lucy just doesn't like Mariah even though I think Mariah really cares about Lucy. Mariah tries to to include her but Lucy seems to push away. I think it's possible that it could have something to do with Lucy's past, but we should find out more as the story goes on...

The relationship between Mariah and Lucy is a very interesting one. Why do you think Mariah's "yellow" pleasant-ness troubled Lucy?
