Lucifer, the true name her mother gave us, reveals to us her mother’s feeling of Lucy, which in essence reflects her own feelings about herself. Lucy is a vivid depiction of her own meaningless life she lived. She is a visible reminder of inferiority to the male kind, and of previous mistakes in life. Lucy refers to her mom as a Saint, but what does her mom think of herself. She certainly taught her daughter lessons to be a good wife, and most importantly not a slut. It may seem that Lucy’s mother is content with her present life (with the exception of Lucy being gone). This is because she has weathered the storm, collected a past of diverse memories. For Lucy, this process is in full swing, but she has a different view of the world.
Essentially Lucy is an exact replica of her mother, but at a different stage, and more specifically “place” in her life. It all boils down to culture influences, and way of life. Lucy’s mother knew nothing but her life on the island, thus steadily settled down to somewhat content life. Lucy how ever has aspects of both the new and old spinning in her head. I thinks she wants a little of both, but more of her original home. She certainly wants something of her own- and the only way to get that is through money. Money is certainly absent at home, and certain things like cameras and books. Lucy is quite confused in her young life, but I think that as she gets older, wisdom will set in. She will realize home is where the heart is, no matter if you have to take things with you there.
