Why Does Place Matter?
My first impression is that Anne Dillard has a negative view about writing. She seems to question her love of writing herself, it shows in her words and make the reader think she dislikes it also. In both readings the authors seem to think that solitude is condusive to better writing. The difference is in the first reading Sanders seems to enjoy writing and looks at the times of solitude positively and Dillard doesn't see solitude in a positive light. The first passage that I got the idea that Dillard did not enjoy writing is when she was chopping the wood, then at the end of the chapter she compares it to writing. Both authors allude to other prominent writers and are obviously well read themselves, and use what they have read in their writing. Dillard mentions figurative place once when she says, "In the actual rooms of time..." I saw more references to non literal places in Sander's writing.
