Walking Over Water

On page 21 of Lucy, the narrator states that "the Devil cannot walk over water." I have sat through numerous lectures throughout my Catholic education that have taught me that Jesus walked on water. Never, however, in my 14+ years of Catholic education had I heard the opposite spin on that teaching. In addition to Jesus, Peter was also able to walk on the stormy sea as long as he believed in Christ's teachings.

The narrator of this story had traveled over an ocean trying to escape from a past that possessed her. She figured that putting as much distance between her and the life she once lived would be a healing power and she would finally be able to be free and happy. Maybe the reason her unhappiness and problems followed her was because of her disbelief. Unlike Peter, the narrator is unable to let go of her pain and move on, but rather dwells in a negative mindset.

Peter was only able to walk on water because he believed Jesus would help him. The Devil is only able to walk on water if you carry him over. I think the narrator (is her name Lucy?) is carrying with her a lifetime of built up bitterness, anger, pain, and resentment that can only be resolved by letting feelings out and people in.

I'm beginning to think that Mariah may be the one to unlock this chest of hurt and put the narrator on a good path. I look forward to reading more about it.

I did not catch this comparison regarding the Devil and Jesus walking on water. I think that you are right though. I think Lucy has a lot of anger and emotions that need to be dealt with. I am not sure, however, if Mariah will be the one to help Lucy accomplish this. Perhaps it will be all of the people that influence her throughout her stay in the United States.

I picked up on the Devil not being able to walk on water too. I like how you linked the turmoil the narrator is carrying with her to the idea of her carrying the Devil across the ocean with her. It makes sense that she is being tortured by her past and that Maria is a character that is bringing the memories back. I agree that Maria will play an important part in the narrator being able to over come her past and mature as an individual.

I agree that Mariah may be the one to eventually aide Lucy. She always mentions how Mariah is so intrigued with the simple things in life, whereas the Lucy is not. Perhaps she is jealous of Mariah, but she won't admit it.

I agree Maria. My first opinion of Lucy is that she's stubborn and bitter about her past. But I do think that Mariah will try her best to help her and be the one to listen to her. I look forward to seeing a hopeful friendship develop as the story goes on.
