Throughout this novel I have been struck by the Lucy's relationship with her mother. She readily admits that she and her mother are extremely similiar yet she refuses to maintain a strong relationship with her. They are very open with each other even when Lucy is at a young age which suggests that they have a better relationship than Lucy likes to admit. I think that it is possible that the two women have such similiar personalities that when they clash in opinion they are both too stubborn to ask for forgiveness. Lucy also harbors a lot of resentment towards her mother for the brothers that were given many more opportunities. Because she and her mother had such a deep connection she was unable to forgive her for not presenting Lucy with similiar opportunities. I also think that it is because of the opportunities she failed to receive from her mother that Lucy desires to be in control in terms of the relationships with friends, lovers, and her mother.
I also feel as though Lucy's promiscuity may be a result of this tension between she and her mother. She is only acting in this way to spite her mother. She secretly does not want to be so loose with her sexuality yet at the same time does not want to fall in love because of all the failed relationships she has witnessed. Between her own mother and father and Miriam and Lewis, love is not at the top of her priority list.

I completely agree that Lucy's promiscuity is the result of tension between her mother. While it may seem immature, I think both girls and boys might do things such as being more promiscuous just to spite their parents. These kids want to prove themselves to their parents, to have control and power. I think Lucy feels that through sex that she wins. She might not be in love, but she got with a guy didn't she?
I agree with the idea on Lucy and love is a direct result of what she saw growing up and a desire to avoid love at all cost. I think that her mother is so much like her that they clash. I have seen many a time where people always seem to bump heads because they are unyieldingly so much alike.
Wow, I never looked at the reason behind Lucy's promiscuity this way. Your reasoning makes all the sense in the world. Seemingly, the only way to separate yourself from a person whom you are quite similar to is to do things differently than the other person would. Lucy is doing everything her mother didn't, just for the sake of rebelling and being different.
